Which back cushions for which seating comfort?
A sofa with cushions is of course the comfort spot in your home. And with a nice combination of loose cushions , and perhaps a soft plaid on your sofa, you can quickly give your living room a makeover. A good cushion can also do a lot for the seating comfort of your sofa.
How many pillows on my couch?
At 4x6 sofa we have 6 different models that all sit slightly differently. Basically, each sofa model has a backrest that is comfortable enough to sit against. Depending on how you want to sit, you can adjust the seating comfort by using loose back cushions, lumbar cushions and a loose armrest. There is a handy guideline for the number of cushions: the number of seats +1. But if you choose smaller cushions (<40 cm) then you can of course choose more. Or just fewer or none if you don't like loose cushions.
It is also useful to think in layers. For example: corner sofa X3 with 4 seats:
- Layer 1 would then be 1 or 2 large back cushions in the same colour as the sofa for a neutral base. (possibly in a different structure)
- Layer 2 will then be 2 or 3 smaller cushions. Here it is nice to choose a contrasting color and/or shape. For example rectangular cushion size S in a contrasting color and a roll or block as an extra armrest. For the filling of these cushions also look at colors, shapes and materials that you use in the living room and how you can reinforce that with the help of cushions.
Modular lounge sofa X6
Model X6 is a lounge sofa with a relatively low and deep seat. This sofa is very suitable for lounging with your friends and 'lying down a bit more'. You can then opt for some extra loose, fancy cushions if you like. But a nice tight lounge sofa without or a single cushion is of course also possible. The sofa is then still wonderfully comfortable and loungy.
If you want to be able to sit upright in addition to lounging, we recommend an extra loose back cushion for the back, such as cushion size M. This is a wide back cushion that is just as high as the backrest. If you choose the same fabric as your sofa, the appearance of the sofa will still be nice and clean. And if you like to play with color and/or structure, that is of course also possible. Think of a corduroy back cushion for a bouclé sofa or a mix of teddy and rib cushions for a corner sofa in beige melange fabric. There are really many possibilities with the 24 colors in which we can make the sofas and cushions and the price always remains the same, no matter which color you choose.
We have recently introduced a narrower version of the wide back cushion; size X. This version aligns exactly with the armrest of the modular sofa X6, allowing you to also use the armrest as a comfortable backrest.
If you are looking for a modular sofa with only 1 armrest (or perhaps no armrest at all), then the loose armrest cushion is a nice solution. At 4x6 sofa we have both a roll cushion and loose armrest as well as a block cushion . It is just what you like better, the comfort is the same.
TIP: Is your sofa resting with its back against the wall? Then you can also place the loose armrest behind your neck as an extra headrest.
Modular sofa on legs X3
The seat of the modular sofa X3 is clearly higher than the lounge sofa X6, which allows you to sit more upright on this sofa. The backrest of model X3 has the same comfort as model X6, but most people choose an extra back cushion. The nice thing is that you can really play with the different sizes of back cushions on this sofa. There are 2 widths for the back cushions: Back cushion size L covers the full width of the backrest and size H is a lot narrower and leaves space on both sides compared to the backrest, making it a bit airier and more playful. For a straight piece of sofa, you can choose, for example:
- Size L everywhere, so the back cushions fit neatly together.
- Size H everywhere, which means that a part of the backrest is visible each time, making the sofa look a bit airier.
- Both sizes of cushions and perhaps also a piece without or using a different cushion so that the image becomes players.
Here too, the narrower back cushion (for model X3 this is size H) is very suitable for the armrest. You can use the armrest very comfortably as a backrest. It is nice that you can also 'give direction' to the modular sofa in this way by creating seats at right angles to each other. This also gives a very surprising effect.
Modular sofa X2
The spacious X2 sofa will soon be available completely modularly. Without extra loose cushions, this is already a wonderful XXL sofa to curl up in. But with the use of the back cushion size M, you can still sit upright in this sofa. More about the cushions for this sofa at the introduction.
Loose cushions for a corner sofa with chaise longue (model X1, X4 and X5)
A standard corner sofa with chaise longue has 4 seats and with the aforementioned rule you could fit 5 cushions. Whether you want this and how you use these cushions is of course very personal.
A few tips that we give in the showroom in Naarden per model:
The corner sofa with chaise longue model X1 has relatively thin armrests. The rectangular cushion size S fits very nicely in the armrest of this model. If you have the cushion made in the same fabric, the look of the sofa remains nice and tight and you still have the comfort. We also sometimes call design & comfort with this model corner sofa. And a friend to everyone in terms of seating comfort.
Design corner sofa X4 has a chaise longue but is slightly different due to the armrest that runs all the way through. In combination with cushion M (often used for model X6) you can also use this part of the chaise longue as an extra seat. And here too we fit the rectangular cushions size S nicely next to the armrest.
For a corner sofa in a small living room, model X5 is very suitable. The seating comfort of this sofa is perfect for many. For the extra support, you don't really need a cushion here. But it is still nice to give the sofa some extra color. For example, with a group of 3 fancy cushions in the corner with one of the armrests.
The above mentioned corner sofas all have armrests on both sides. However, it looks very nice to place the loose armrest in roll form next to the armrest here. As a decorative element or as a loose headrest when the sofa is against the wall.
Cushions made to order
Cushions of 4x6 sofa are coordinated with the sofa and can be made in the same fabric or in a contrasting fabric. We have some cushions in stock . But most cushions are produced per piece, at the same time as the sofa. This way the fabric is well coordinated in terms of color and fabric direction.
If you want to reorder 1 or more pillows, you can of course always do so, but you may have to wait a while before the pillow is in your home because the pillows are made individually. Of course, this is much more environmentally friendly because a pillow produced individually is always used well and no overstocks are created that no one is waiting for.
Maintenance of the loose (back) cushions?
Because you naturally like to use the back cushions a lot, they will also deform more quickly. The loose cushions of the 4x6 sofa are filled with a polyester flock, which prevents the filling from sinking down as happens with a down-filled cushion. But to keep the cushions in the best possible shape, it is best to maintain the cushions well from the start. This means that you regularly open the zipper of the cushion cover and fluff the filling with your fingers without damaging the inner cover of the cushion filling. Then close the cushion cover neatly again and the cushions will remain nicely full and upright for the time being. If the cushion sinks again, repeat the previous action .
Careful maintenance really does wonders for your sofa and for your cushions. But if you use the back cushions really intensively and the filling seems to become very thin after a year or two, we can always make a new cushion filling for you so that your loose back cushions can last for a long time again.
By the way, all loose cushions of the 4x6 sofa have a removable cushion cover so that you can easily clean the cover.
